Cell Division
- Cell Division: the process in which a parent cell (the beginning cell) splits into two daughter cells (two new cells).
- There are two types of cells prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Prokaryotic cells have a single chromosome, no nucleus and a few other organelles. Eukaryotic cells have multiple chromosomes (molecules of DNA) that are contained within the nucleus and other organelles.
- Binary Fission: most prokaryotic cells divide this way. Three steps: DNA replication, chromosome segregation and seperation into two daughter cells.
- Eukaryotes have more complex dividing method than eukaryotes.
- Two major steps for Eukaryotic cell division:
(2) Cytokinesis: the division of the cytoplasm, which creates two genetically identical daughter cells.
